Sudirman Cup Badminton Tournament: Fourth day
May 13, 2009 - India finished at the top of their group today at the Sudirman Cup after taking care of Sweden in an impressive 5-0 showing. India will now advance to the play-offs on Thursday and are one of the favored teams to get promoted to Group 2.This general view shows the preliminary matches being played at the Sudirman Cup world mixed team badminton championships at the Guangzhou Gymnasium, in China's southern city of Guangzhou on May 11, 2009.
In other action Poland beat Russia 3-2 and Singapore defeated the Netherlands 4-1. Mongolia suffered their third 0-5 loss to Portugal, who topped group 4B. The Ukraine beat Australia 3-2, South Africa downed Turkey 3-2, Thailand beat Chinese Taipei 4-1, England took care of Japan 4-1 and Germany defeated France in straight matches 5-0.
An undefeated South Korea made its way into the playoffs as well after their match against Hong Kong. Hong Kong will now have to win against Japan if they are to stay in the elite grouping of the tournament. Tomorrows matches will see a much anticipat
ed duel between the top Chinese and Indonesian teams. Malaysia will do battle against Denmark, with both teams needing a victory to keep their semi-final chances alive. The Denmark team was dealt a blow
though as star player Peter Gade was taken to hospital to be checked out for a migraine. He will not continue on in the tournament. Denmark already started the tournament without women's number one player Tine Rasmussen.
