Badminton Scoring
.) Most professional matches are a best of three game with the first person/team to 21 by two or the first person/team to reach 30. In order to speed up the game rally scoring was adopted, which states that the receiving side is able to score as well as the serving side. Thus making service errors much more detrimental.
.) When the score is even, the server serves from the right side of the service court. When the score is odd, the server serves from the left side of the service court.
.) If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from alternate service court. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server.
.) In doubles there is only one serve per side, and the service alternates between the partners. No player is allowed to serve twice, or receive two serves in a service hand. With service court errors the new server should also be in the service court matching the new score i.e. Right for an even score.
.) In doubles if your opponent's partner touches or hits the shuttle, it is considered to be a 'fault' and your side scores a point.
.) Other faults that award points include: touching the net with your body or racket, the shuttle hitting the ceiling, or the shuttle hitting one of the players, if a player misses the shuttle on a serve attempt, or deliberately distracting your opponent with gestures and verbal outbursts.
.) In their is a third game, both teams must change sides when one of the teams reach 11 points. If it is only a game to 15 the men change at 8 points and the women change at 6 points.
.) In there is a let called there is no change to the score and the rally will be replayed. A let can be called by the umpire if: the server serves before the receiver is ready, during a serve the server and receiver are both given a fault at the same time, or after the serve is returned the shuttlecock is caught on the top and remains suspended, or gets caught in the net after crossing over. During play if the shuttle completely comes apart from the base, if a player is distracted by the opposing side coach (up to the umpire's judgement), a line judge didn't see the call and the umpire is undecided, or when any unforeseen event or accident occurs.
.) While the shuttle is in play the point continues until it lands on either sides court floor, it is hit out of bounds, hits the ceiling, or fails to make its way over the net.
.) In doubles the player of the receiving side who served last, stays in the same service court from where he served last. The reverse pattern applies to the receiver’s partner. The players do not change service courts until they win a point when their side is serving. If players commit an error in the service court, the error is immediately corrected when the mistake is discovered.
