Badminton Court

The official badminton court sizes are shown in the image below, the court were traditionally out of wood, but any surface can be played on as long as its not slippery. Since the stard birdie is white, the floor must be of a darker color and if painted mustn't be glossy, since any reflection can distract the player. Court lines must be white or yellow and must be clearly signaled. Each line must be 40mm in width, which mark the court boundaries.

The outside dimensions of a badminton court are 13.4 meters (44ft) long by 6.1 meters (20ft) wide. These lines mark the sidelines for double play and long lines for singles. The net goes at the exact middle leaving 6.7 meters on each side of the court.

The short service line is placed 1.98 meters from the court middle, or from the net. The center line divides the left service area from the right service area and they start from the long line to the short service line. Measuring 4.72 meters in total length.

The side lines for singles are 0.46 meters within the doubles sideline on each side. As above mentioned the long lines are the same for both singles play and doubles, including the service line for singles; however the service line for doubles is marked 0.76 meters inside the long lines.

The net must be 1.55 meters (5.1ft) high on each side and 1.524 meters (5ft) high in the middle. The net posts must be outside of the court or on the doubles line. No space can be left between the net sides and post. If it is unpractical to secure the net posts to the ground, it is also possible to fasten the net to the side walls placing a 40mm line marking where the post would

Serving area:

The serving area is where a player must be located when serving either on the right or left side; the player receiving a serve must also remain inside the serving area until the serve is complete. If a player steps or touches the line while serving or receiving a serve it is counted as a fault and their opponent wins a point. When serving; both server and receiver may not lift a foot until the birdie is struck by the server. When serving it must always be diagonally from right serving area to left or from left to right.

Where is a Good Location to setup a Badminton court:

Although there aren't any ceiling height regulations in the Laws of Badminton, it is usually recommended to have a minimum height of 7.6 meters (25ft) for training badminton courts and 9.1 meters (30ft) for competitions. Although a lower ceiling building may be used it wouldn't be recommended for professional levels. The space surrounding the court must measure a minimum of 2.5 meters from the long service line and 2.3 meters from the sidelines. All surrounding walls should be the same color with a non-glossy finish. The court lines are preferably white however yellow lines may also be used when using a multi-purpose court where other sport lines are marked. When using a court solely for badminton we recommend securing the net support tightly to the floor with screws or using weight posts to hold the net tightly at the proper height.

Lighting a Badminton Court:

When using sun light, the lighting must come from above when possible and the building has windows make sure they have curtains or shades to close them if needed. When installing electrical lighting we recommend using two sets of light fixtures placed at 0.60-0.90 meters from the sidelines one on each side of the court next to the net and a minimum of 4.88 meters off the ground. Using a tungsten light bulbs adding up to a total of 1000W on each side would be ideal. These can be suspended from the ceiling or secured to light posts.
