2009 Badminton World Championships: third day

Number eight ranked Hongyan Pi from France (returning a shot at left) beat Shi Han Hung from Taipei 21-13, 21-12 in just over half an hour on court number four today.  In other women's action Mi Zhou downed Michelle Chan Ky of New Zealand 21-11,21-15. German Juliane Shenck (at right) beat Russian Ella Diehl 21-9, 21-11. Xingfang Xie was all square in her match before the Bulgarian Linda Zechiri retired.  Number two Lin Wang took 29 minutes to knock out Yu Hirayama of Japan 21-13, 21-12.  In the most exciting match for the crowd, their star Saina Nehwal began her tournament with a 21-10, 21-17 victory over Russia's Anastasia Prokopenko.  She will be in action again tomorrow. Number seven ranked Lan Lu easily took care of Indonesia's  Adrianti Firdasari 21-17, 21-8. And finally number four ranked Yihan Wang ended Scotland's Susan Egelstaff's tournament with a 21-13, 21-16 win.           
 
China's Chen Jin returns a shot against India's Kashyap P. during their men's singles match in a preliminary round of the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad August 12, 2009.In men's action all the big names showed up to play and will continue on.  Lee Chong Wei took 22 minutes to take care of the unseeded Nigerian Ola Fagberni 21-11, 21-14.  Taufik Hidayat won 21-17, 21-15 against his opponent  Mathieu Lo Ying Ping of France. Number three, and one of the favorites, Peter Hoeg Gade beat  Sho Sasaki of Japan 21-11, 21-12. unseeded Kenichi Tago continued his streak beating German Marc Zwiebler 21-15, 21-10.
 
Sony Dwi Kuncoro solved Polish player Przemyslaw Wacha in 31 minutes, 21-12, 21-13.  Number two ranked Jin Chen (at left) had a tough three match battle against Kashyap P from India 14-21, 21-10, 21-17.  India's Chetan Anand gave the crowd something to cheer about when he won 21-9, 21-7 against Bulgaria's Stilian Makarski. Lin Dan knocked out Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-16, 21-12.   Simon Sanotosa needed three sets to finally take out Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore 21-13, 19-21, 21-16 in 51 minutes.  Joe Wu of New Zealand couldn't stage the upset, as Boonsak Ponsana won 21-16, 21-6.  The only unseeded player to take out a ranked player today was Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark who knocked out number eight ranked Korean Sung Hwan Park in a well deserved three match 21-16, 17-21, 21-15 win.
 
In men's doubles number seven ranked Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano of Indonesia lost to unseeded Zhendong Guo and Chen Xu of China 22-24 ,21-10, 21-9. Also advancing are Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia, number five ranked Yun Cai and Haifeng Fu of China, Korea's Jae Sung Jung and Yong Dae Lee, and Indonesia's eighth ranked pairing of Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and  Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari.
 
In women's doubles advancing to the next round will be: the number ten ranked Indonesians  Shendy Puspa Irawati and Meiliana Jauhari, Jin Ma and Xiaoli Wang of China, the number one pairing of Eei Hui Chin and Pei Tty Wong of Malaysia, China's Yawen Zhang and Tingting Zhao, Jung Eun Ha and Min Jung Kim of Korea and Indonesian's  Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii.
 
 
Canadian Men's doubles partners William Milroy and Toby Ng couldn't beat number ten ranked Michal Logosz and Robert Mateusik of Poland, and were beaten 21-14, 21-14.
