2009 Badminton World Championships: second day

 Tuesday August 11th Results - Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia (at left) won his first match against Switzerland's Christian Boesiger 21-14, 21-14. China's Jin Chen was also successful in his match againstKenichi Tago of Japan plays a shot against Joachim Persson of Denmark during the mens singles badminton match of the World Badminton Championships at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. Persson crashed out of the world badminton championships, losing to Tago in the men s singles first round. Eric Pang of Denmark 21-14, 21-19.  The upset of Tuesday came when unseeded  Kenichi Tago of Japan (at right) fought hard to beat seventh-seeded Joachim Persson of Denmark in three sets 16-21 21-14 21-13. It took the Japanese shuttler 57 minutes to rebound from a first set loss and secure the victory.  India's Arvind Bhat couldn't manage to solve ninth-seeded Hsieh Yu Hsing of Taiwan, and went down in front of the hometown crowd 21-14, 19-21, 24-22.  Afterwards he said, "I was feeling good with my game, but I am sad about the end result. It has often been happening in my career that I am unable to finish off matches."

In women's singles seventh-seeded Lu Lan of China (at left) won her match, as expected, against Larisa Griga of the Ukraine 21-16, 21-5.   She was one of the only top ranked women's players to take to the court today and begin their quest for the women's title. Tomorrow will see a lot more of Lu Lan's competition and the women standing in her way.
 
Number nine ranked Chen Wang of Korea beat Hsiao Huan Chen of Taipei 21-19, 21-10.

Other notable match results from Day Two:

  William Milroy and Fiona McKee were defeated by Yeon Seong Yoo and Min Jung of Korea 21-13, 21-19 in 22 minutes.  
 
Mixed doubles:
-Thomas Laybourn & Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark beat Sarah Thomas and Richard Vaughan of Wales 21-15, 21-12.
-India's Diju Valiyaveetil & Jwala Gutta had a walkover, as did Sudket Prapakamol & Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand and Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark.
-Third-seeded Bo Zheng and Jin Ma of China beat Liu Ying Goh and Peng Soon Chan of Malaysia 21-12,21-16.
- Zhongbo Xie and Yawen Zhang of China downed Chieh Min Fang and Wen Hsing Cheng of Taipei in a hard fought match 17-21, 21-11, 21-8.
- Fifth ranked Kien Keet Koo and Hui Lin Ng of Malaysia beat the Netherland's Ruud Bosch and Paulien Van Dooremalen 21-19,21-14 before playing in their second match of the day, and winning against Taipei's Yi Hsing Hsieh and Yu Chin Chien 21-15,21-14.
 
Women's doubles:
-Nova Widianto & Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia won easily in an astonishing 16 minute match- 21-12, 21-9 against Aleksei Konakh and Alesia Zaitsava of Belarus.
- Shendy Puspa Irawati & Meiliana Jauhari of Indonesia had a walkover.
 
Men's singles:
- Sung Hwan Park, ranked eighth, from Korea won his first match in three sets 19-21, 21-13, 21-18 versus Norway's Steinar Klausen.
- Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland took just 24 minutes to beat Hsuan Yi Hsueh of Taipei21-10, 21-13.
-Sixteenth seeded  Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand also advanced with his 21-14, 14-21, 21-17 victory over Kestutis Navickas of Lithuania.
- Simon Santoso of Indonesia scored a 22-20.21-11 victory over Belgium's  Yuhan Tan.
 
Wednesday will see some exciting matches as some of the top ranked men's and women's singles shuttlers will take to the court. Number one ranked Mi Zhou of Hong Kong, number eleven ranked Juliane Schenk from Germany, number four Yihan Wang, India's brightest hopeful and number six ranked Saina Nehwal, number two ranked Lin Wang of China and number eight from France,  Hongyan Pi.  For the men it will be number one Lee Chong Wei, number two Jin Chen, defending Champ Lin Dan,  number ten Yan Kit Chan, number three Peter Hoeg Gade, Kenichi Tago of Japan who ousted Joachim Persson today, number six Sony Dwi Koncoro will face Poland's Przemyslaw Wacha, in what should be an entertaining match-up.    
 
 
*A Malaysian coach was quarantined today with concerns over swine flue, while a doubles pair from Thailand withdrew when one of them complained of a fever.  Swine flue has killed eight people in India, and the area where the tournament is being played has recorded 76 positive cases.
